We managed to catch the last night of holiday ligh

We managed to catch the last night of holiday lights on the San Antonio River Walk last night. We took the boat tour. We aren’t city people, but the river walk with the lights was amazing. We’re looking forward to heading back to see it in the daylight. I’m honestly a little disappointed we didn’t know such a thing existed. This isn’t like a walk down the river where it’s just a sidewalk. It ancient trees lined with shops, and restaurants. It might be the first city we love.

The eternal light peace memorial at Gettysburg is a must-see if you’re in town. You can stand where the confederates stood in an attempt to take the high ground. There’s a lookout where you can see across the battlefields. There’s also a row of memorials from various states. The town of Gettysburg can be seen not to far in the distance.

Sachs Covered Bridge in Gettysburg was used by bot

Sachs Covered Bridge in Gettysburg was used by both confederate and Union soldiers during the civil war. You can no longer drive through it, but for being so old, it’s in amazing shape. We were the only people there when we stopped by. I’m sure in the fall when the leaves are bright and colorful, this bridge stands out even more.

The Pennsylvania State Memorial at Gettysburg Nati

The Pennsylvania State Memorial at Gettysburg National Park is something to behold. It’s so large that one of the pillars has a spiral staircase in it and you can stand on the balcony just below the dome. You can look out over the battlefield from the balcony. You can also see the many monuments erected by other states.

A couple of weeks ago we joined the naturalist at a state park for a lantern light trail walk and owl calling event. We walked a 3 mile trail, stopped by waterfalls and called in 3 owls. It was amazing and we can’t wait to go again this month before we head NE.

We went on the lantern light owl walk at @mohicans

We went on the lantern light owl walk at @mohicanstatepark last night. The trail is rated difficult on a normal day. 😬 We had LED lanterns and walked 3 miles in the dark. We stopped and listened to the falls in the dark and then went to the covered bridge for Kyle to call to the owls. It was so amazing when they started responding. Here’s a clip of the owls ….

Whenever you’re traveling, be sure to ask the locals about the hidden gems. We learned about this little water hole with a natural slide from the gal at the front desk at our RV spot in Moab. It was about a mile back a path, but it was SO worth the walk.

Yosemite ranks as my #1 favorite National Park. Yes, there are other amazing parks all vying for first place, but after living outside of her gates for years, she forever holds my heart. We’re at 27 National Parks at the moment and hoping to add many more. Maybe she’ll be bumped out of the first spot, but they also said Zion, Glacier or Yellowstone might do that. They didn’t.

I’m feeling like I need to go West again soon. I didn’t get a chance to hike Zion and the Grand Canyon because of littles, but we enjoyed them nonetheless. Now that my littles are use to my hiking shenanigans, I think it’s time to head back for round three. This time with trekking poles.

Going to The Sun Road is a steep and winding rock lined narrow road that offers amazing views. Fill your tank before you go. This 50 mile trip is a solid two hours of driving on a low traffic day.

This pup helped me get in 6+ miles before lunch today. She’s been across the country 7-8 times now. I’ve lost count. She’s been to a solid dozen national parks. Our older dog has been to 26.

She’s currently training so she can carry her own water and snacks, so not much other than a patch on her harness at the moment.

If you’re making a road trip out west this summe

If you’re making a road trip out west this summer and are taking the 40, be sure to add the Walnut Canyon National Monument to your stops.
These hand built homes feature doorways, windows and chimneys perched around both sides of a horseshoe canyon. The doorways are just 18” to a few feet from a several hundred foot drop off to the canyon below. Soot from their fires is still visible on the ceilings.
It’s a definite must-see if you’re traveling out west and want to make a quick stop to see historical places along the way.
.
Side note: There are a lot of steps to get down to the canyon and it is not wheelchair accessible.
